March is Women's History Month

This celebration of the world’s women started in 1981 as Women’s History Day, but it soon became apparent more than a day was needed to honor all the accomplishments of women. So in 1987, Women’s History Month was launched.

The theme for Women’s History Month 2015 is: “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives.”

The National Women’s History Project describes the theme this way:

“Accounts of the lives of individual women are critically important because they reveal exceptionally strong role models who share a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. The stories of women’s lives, and the choices they made, encourage girls and young women to think larger and bolder, and give boys and men a fuller understanding of the female experience. Knowing women’s achievements challenges stereotypes and upends social assumptions about who women are and what women can accomplish today.”

Over the years, the fastener industry has benefitted from having many inspiring women in leadership roles. These include women who broke down barriers, founded companies, chaired associations and reported on the industry’s news and trends.

This year’s theme for Women’s History Month is certainly appropriate for our industry’s women leaders. These individuals have been strong role models and mentors to those of us coming up behind them. They have taught us to expect more from ourselves and to do more for others. It is our responsibility to share their legacy with our peers and the next generation of women in the fastener industry.

Is there a woman in your work experience who has had a major impact on your life and career? Then take the time to tell her story. Perhaps there is someone out there who might find inspiration in your personal story. Share it with others and inspire even more. Take a tip from this Women’s History Month theme and weave!
