A Mentoring Message

“By helping others, you will learn how to help yourselves.”

Aung San Suu Kyi

What do you think of when you hear the word “mentor”? As I’ve learned over my career, mentoring in some form happens regularly all around us. If you are lucky enough to have a trusted person who cares about you and your career, to whom you can turn with a confidential or challenging career situation, you have found a true mentor.

When the WIFI group was established, one of its stated missions was to be a resource for women at any stage of their careers seeking an open ear and words of guidance on topics unique to our industry, or to women in the workplace in general.

Can you mentor someone without their asking for mentoring? Oftentimes, mentoring happens naturally, out of a simple question, request, or observation. There may be situations where one feels the need for guidance, but isn’t sure where to turn. If one isn’t lucky enough to have a trusted co-worker or colleague to turn to, the Women in the Fastener Industry group offers confidential mentoring. Having been involved with this group for several years now, and getting to know these women better, I see the genuine spirit of cooperation and support that exists on all levels. We mentor one another regularly, without even realizing it, as questions and concerns are answered in an atmosphere of concern and cooperation. Regardless of our age or career stage, we all have plenty to learn from one another.

There are times in all of our careers, whether you are a seasoned veteran or someone just starting out in their first job, when we need a mentor, a trusted person who can listen and provide guidance. Mentoring doesn’t have to be a formal exercise. Mentoring and coaching often go hand in hand, though mentoring implies a bit more of a personal connection, a genuine trust and understanding.

In 2015, the Women in the Fastener Industry group will be offering a unique new service to its members – the Mentoring Message Board. Confidential help and guidance will be available on any topic. The response can be made individually, if desired, or posted to the message board for the benefit of others who may have the same concern.

More information and details to come. In the meantime, remember that WIFI is full of knowledgeable women willing and able to give and receive support – contact us anytime!
